At Inside The Husk, we recognize the intricate relationship between communities, seeds and the biology of the landscapes that shape us. Through the conservation of plant species and the integration of traditional ecological knowledge, we honor the practices sustained before us, supporting the resilience of our llaktas, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Much like a living study, Inside The Husk is a dynamic practice—a space for research, a place for community, and an evolving idea where cultural conservation meets scientific innovation.

WHO WE ARE 

At Inside The Husk, we recognize the profound connection between seed pathways and human well-being. Through the restoration of heirloom seed varieties and the expansion of our understanding of "wild plant species "within their ecological & cultural contexts—focusing on higher taxonomic classes—they can be preserved these landscapes within our communities as foundational elements—we work to uphold and revitalize the vegetative heritage that sustains us. Guided by respect for Indigenous cultural protocols and cultural humility, our role as seed keepers extends into a broader conservation network. This community-led restoration process has catalyzed a social shift, encouraging reciprocal relationships and fostering better health. We support communities in nourishing their seed traditions, ensuring the continued resilience and vitality of the landscapes and lives that depend on them.

Mimi  Lucero (Kichwa) & Chuli Mesh (Yucatec Maya) are ethnobotanical researchers and and co-founders of Inside The Husk,  ethnobotanical researchers and co-founders of Inside The Husk, an Indigenous-led initiative dedicated to the preservation of seeds as vital cultural and ecological artifacts. Focused on the revitalization of ancestral foodways and the health of ecosystems, their work bridges tradition and innovation. Residing in North and Central America, they engage in active research across diverse communities, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.

OUR VISION

Inside The Husk work's is committed to engaging with elders, knowledge holders, and youth to preserve and understand the intricate narratives of seed tissue. To enrich this approach, we collaborate with institutions that offer cutting-edge research technologies, ensuring their thoughtful integration within a cultural framework. This synergy between traditional wisdom and scientific innovation reflects our dedication to advancing knowledge while honoring the heritage that sustains it.
